DxO announces a new version of DxO PhotoLab, the leading photo editing software. DxO PhotoLab 3 with a completely redesigned HSL color adjustment feature, an optimized retouching tool and a brand new Local Adjustments MasksManager tool offers a new level of color control, making the photographer’s work easier than ever before. Since DxO PhotoLibrary now supports keyword searches, the program offers a more convenient workflow and improved compatibility with other photo editors.

A new approach to color adjustment

With its innovative approach to color management, DxO PhotoLab 3’s HSL (Hue, Saturation and Luminance) tool offers even more flexible control to create even more natural or creative images. It has a new chromatic circle-based color adjustment mode called DxO ColorWheel. With this tool, you can select a color gamut of eight different channels, fine-tune the value, select a color to replace, and adjust transitions as the photographer desires.

The new Uniformity option also lets you adjust color variations within a certain range. The “Saturation” and “Brightness” controls now work more independently, providing more flexibility, especially when converting from black and white to color and creating partially unsaturated images.

“The DxO ColorWheel tool helps create a new approach that makes color management flexible and engaging. This tool is incredibly user-friendly,” said Jean-Marc Alexia, vice president of marketing and product strategy at DxO.

Updated retouching tool.

DxO PhotoLab 3 improves local processing options, offering users even greater accuracy. The new version updates the Repair Tool, which acts like a brush that can erase unwanted elements from an image. You can now manually move the area of the original image that the photographer wants to use to restore the area in the edited image. In addition to the restore mode, DxO PhotoLab 3 also offers a clone mode that allows you to directly replace the edited area. The level of shading and opacity can also be adjusted in both modes.

The new Local Adjustment Mask Manager

The new Local Adjustments palette in DxO PhotoLab 3 allows you to manage local adjustment masks that have been applied to a single image. You can make the masks visible, hide them, or adjust their opacity individually. The tool also lets you rotate the selected mask with a single click, which provides additional flexibility and saves a significant amount of time.

New workflow with keywords

In addition to the search criteria already available in DxO PhotoLibrary (metadata, shooting parameters, folders, etc.), DxO PhotoLab 3 now offers keyword management and optimizes image organization right down to export. The keywords associated with the image can now be displayed in the interface, including when importing them from other programs. You can now add, remove, or rename keywords for one or more images simultaneously and include them in multiple criteria searches (MacOS version only; this feature will be available in the Windows version in the near future). DxO PhotoLab 3 also offers more information and metadata display options, as well as additional project management options.

Support for new cameras

DxO PhotoLab 3 continues to add new cameras to the list of supported equipment. The Canon G5 X Mark II and G7 X Mark III, Nikon P1000, Panasonic Lumix DC-G90 / G95 / G99 / G91, Lumix DC FZ1000 II and Lumix TZ95 / ZS80, Ricoh GR III and Sony A7R IV and RX100 VII were recently added. More than 3,000 optics have also been added to the database, and the bada melonx now includes more than 50,000 different camera/lens combinations. The software’s noise reduction capabilities for RAW photos taken with some Canon and Olympus cameras have also been improved.

Serif has released a version 1.9 update to the Affinity suite of applications, which includes Affinity Photo, Designer and Publisher, a competitor program from Adobe. This free update contains several enhancements, including live plastics, RAW enhancements and GPU acceleration for Windows computers. The software, which runs as part of version 1.9, has undergone many improvements. From user-friendly and productive photo editing and graphic design software to functional editing and publishing software, Affinity applications continue to set new standards for creative software.

Affinity applications are continually improving, as evidenced by today’s launch of version 1.9, with new features and significant additional enhancements.

Ashley Hewson, managing director of Affinity product development at Serif, said: “Another year has seen a record number of people switching to Affinity products, and it’s very exciting to start 2021 with another significant free upgrade. We’re adding more tools and features that will allow artists, designers, photographers and editors in even the most complex workflows to take advantage of the speed and capabilities of Affinity products.”

Affinity Designer introduces a new tool for working with outlines.

The Affinity Designer graphic design app will feature a new path tool that will provide an intuitive way to add paths and line offsets to any shape or outline. In addition, we’ve added the ability to place linked images and resources, reducing file size and making collaboration easier.

In Affinity Publisher, importing IDML files will be noticeably faster, and the new packaging feature will allow users to consolidate all image and font resources from a project into one folder, which can then be easily transferred to another system to facilitate collaboration or print production.

Posted PDF documents can be set to “pass through” for 100% export accuracy, and users can easily integrate text and image links from external data sources into the document thanks to the new data merge feature.

The Affinity Publisher app now has a data merge feature available.

A key feature that allows Affinity Photo to stand out from the competition is the non-destructive workflow, which has again been taken to a whole new level with the ability to add plastic deformation corrections in the form of dynamic masking layers. In addition, we’ve made significant improvements to the RAW file processing module, created new functionality for bound layers, outline text, and a whole new mode for astrophotography overlay that delivers incredible results.

Windows users will be happy to know that the latest update includes GPU acceleration, which can improve the performance of many pixel tasks by a factor of ten (the exact amount of acceleration depends on system specifications). The Windows versions now have the same graphics card acceleration mechanism as the macOS or iPad versions of the apps, which were among the first professional sets of creative apps to be optimized for Apple’s new M1 chip.

The free 1.9 update is available to all macOS, Windows and iPad users of Affinity apps today.
